Short answer: paste a YouTube video or Shorts link above and press Get description. You get the full description text with its line breaks, a count against YouTube's 5,000-character limit, and separate copy-ready lists of every link, chapter timestamp and hashtag. Public and unlisted videos work; private ones don't.
What this YouTube description extractor does
A YouTube description can hold 5,000 characters of links, timestamps, credits and context, and it's awkward to copy. On a computer you have to expand "…more" and drag-select around buttons; in the YouTube app on a phone it's hard or impossible to select. The YouTube description extractor gives you the whole text in a box you can copy in one click, with line breaks preserved.
It also does the sorting for you. Links, chapter timestamps and hashtags are extracted into separate lists, each with its own copy button, and the chapters are checked against YouTube's rules so you can see whether they'd actually show up as chapters.
What's inside a YouTube description
| Element | What the tool does with it |
|---|---|
| Full text | Shown with line breaks intact; copy or save as .txt |
| Character count | Measured against YouTube's 5,000-character limit |
Timestamps (0:00 Intro) | Listed as chapters and checked against YouTube's chapter rules |
| Links | Every URL, de-duplicated, ready to copy |
| Hashtags | Listed in order; YouTube may show up to three of them by the title |
YouTube's chapter rules
Timestamps only turn into clickable chapters when they meet YouTube's requirements (YouTube Help):
- The first timestamp must be 0:00.
- There must be at least three timestamps, in ascending order.
- Each chapter must be at least 10 seconds long.
The extractor checks all three and tells you which one fails, which is handy when you're debugging chapters on your own video.
A worked example
Say a cooking video's description reads, in part:
Full recipe: https://example.com/dal
0:00 Intro
0:45 Soaking the lentils
3:10 Tempering
0:05 Serving
#dal #indianfood The extractor lists one link, four chapters and two hashtags. Under Chapters it reports "Won't show as chapters: 0:05 is out of order", because the last timestamp jumps backwards. The uploader most likely meant 5:05. Fix that one line and the same list passes all of YouTube's checks.
The chapter detection reads a timestamp at the start of a line (0:00 Intro, (0:00) Intro, 0:00 - Intro) or at the end of a short line (Intro 0:00). A timestamp in the middle of a sentence is not treated as a chapter.
What it does not do
- It doesn't get the hidden tags. Use the YouTube tag extractor for those.
- It doesn't read comments, pinned comments or the transcript. For the spoken words, use the YouTube transcript downloader.
- It handles one video at a time. A channel link returns a message asking for a video link; to look up a channel's ID instead, use the channel ID finder.
What people use it for
- Saving links from mobile. The gear list, source or download link in a description is the main reason people need to copy one, and the app makes it hard.
- Competitor research. See how top videos in your niche structure their first two lines, which links they push and how they use chapters.
- Notes and study. Save tutorial descriptions with their chapters as a text outline.
- Backing up your own descriptions before a big edit.
- Checking chapters. Find out why your timestamps aren't showing as chapters.
Writing a better description
If you're extracting descriptions to improve your own, a few things are worth knowing. Only the first couple of lines show before "…more" on the watch page, and they're also what search results show, so lead with what the video delivers rather than social links. Chapters help viewers jump to what they want and can appear in Google search results as "key moments". Keep hashtags to a few relevant ones; YouTube ignores every hashtag on a video that has more than 60 (YouTube Help).
Troubleshooting
- The description is empty. The uploader left it blank. That's common on Shorts.
- "YouTube says this video is unavailable." It was deleted, made private or is blocked in some regions, or the link is incomplete.
- "This video is private, so its details aren't public." Exactly that. Unlisted videos work if you have the link.
- "That's a channel link." Paste a link to a single video.
- "YouTube didn't respond." A temporary failure on YouTube's side or ours. Try again in a minute.
- The text is in a different language from what you see. YouTube can show a description translated into your language. The tool requests the English version, which is the original unless the uploader added an English translation.
Privacy
The video ID is sent to this site's server, which fetches the video's public details from YouTube and passes them back. Nothing is stored or logged, and there's no login or extension. Need the video's image too? The YouTube thumbnail downloader saves it at full size.
