What this Threads video downloader does
Threads, Meta's text-first social app, has no download button. You can like, repost, quote or share a post, but you can't save the video or photo in it. The Threads video downloader fills that gap. Paste the link to a public post and it shows every video and photo in that post, each with a button to save the original file.
"Original" matters here. The tool doesn't screen-record, re-compress or watermark anything. It finds the same file Threads streams to the app, at the largest size Threads stores, and hands it to you.
How Threads stores videos and photos
Threads runs on Instagram's media infrastructure. When someone posts a video, Threads keeps several encoded versions at different resolutions on Meta's content delivery network. Photos are stored in several sizes too. The public web version of a post describes all of them, including every item in a carousel.
The tool reads that description, picks the highest-resolution version of each video and photo, and lists them in the order they appear in the post. When you press Download, the file is streamed to you with an instruction to save it, because browsers would otherwise just play the video in a new tab.
Meta's media links are signed and expire after a while. If you leave the page open for hours and a download fails, paste the post link again to get fresh links.
Which Threads links work
| Link type | Example | Works? |
|---|---|---|
| Post link (current domain) | threads.com/@natgeo/post/Dd1RLl4EU9A | Yes |
| Post link (old domain) | threads.net/@natgeo/post/… | Yes |
| Short link | threads.com/t/… | Yes |
| Carousel (several videos/photos) | Any post link | Yes: every item is listed |
| A reply with a video | The reply's own post link | Yes |
| Profile link | threads.com/@natgeo | No: link to a single post |
| Post from a private profile | Any | No |
| Instagram post or Reel | instagram.com/… | No: this tool is for Threads |
How to copy a Threads post link
In the Threads app (iPhone and Android)
Tap the share icon below the post, the paper-plane arrow, then Copy link. To download from a reply, open the reply first, so the link you copy is the reply's own.
On threads.com in a browser
Click the ⋯ menu at the top-right of the post and choose Copy link. Or click the post's timestamp to open it on its own page, and copy the address bar.
Where your downloads go
| Device | Where the file ends up | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone / iPad (Safari) | Files → Downloads | Open the file → Share → Save Video or Save Image to put it in Photos |
| Android (Chrome) | Downloads folder | Shows up in Google Photos and most galleries automatically |
| Windows / Mac | Your browser's download folder | Videos are MP4 (H.264), so they play anywhere |
On iPhone, use Safari itself. Opening this page from inside another app's built-in browser, such as Instagram, Threads or Gmail, often blocks downloads altogether.
Troubleshooting: error messages and fixes
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| "That doesn't look like a Threads post link" | A profile link, a link from another app, or a cut-off link | Open the post itself and use Copy link |
| "This post is text only" | The post has no media of its own; the video is in a reply or quoted post | Open the reply or quoted post and copy its link |
| "Couldn't read this post" | Private profile, deleted post, or Threads briefly refusing requests | Open the link in a private window. If it loads there, retry in a few minutes |
| Download fails after a long wait | The signed media link expired | Paste the post link again |
| Video has no sound | Posted silent, often with captions burned in | Check the original post; there is no separate audio to recover |
| Some carousel items are missing | Items removed after posting or that failed to process | Only items still in the post can be downloaded |
| iPhone opens the video instead of saving it | An in-app browser (Instagram, Threads, Gmail) is handling the link | Open this page in Safari, then download |
Every way to save a Threads video, compared
| Method | What you end up with | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| This tool | The original MP4 or JPG, full quality | Public posts only |
| Threads' Save button | A bookmark inside the app | No file; disappears if the post is deleted |
| Screen recording | A new recording of your screen | Lower quality, captures the app interface, and needs trimming |
| Meta's Download your information | An archive of everything you posted | Only your own posts; takes time to prepare |
| Downloader apps and extensions | Usually the MP4 | Install permissions; some ask for your login, which you should never give |
Screen recording is the method people fall back on most, and the worst one. It re-compresses the video, records the like and reply buttons, and makes it hard to get the start and end right. Saving the file Threads already serves is faster and loses nothing.
Downloading Threads videos on Android, step by step
- In the Threads app, tap the share (paper plane) icon under the post and choose Copy link.
- Open Chrome, go to this page, and tap the box. Tap Paste, or long-press and paste.
- Tap Get media and wait a moment for the preview.
- Tap Download under the video. Chrome shows a download bar at the bottom. Tap Open to play it, or find it later in Files → Downloads.
If the download opens in a player instead of saving, long-press the Download button and choose Download link.
Downloading Threads videos on iPhone and iPad, step by step
- Tap the share icon under the post, then Copy link.
- Open Safari (not the in-app browser) and go to this page. Paste the link and tap Get media.
- Tap Download. Safari asks whether to download the file; confirm, and a blue arrow appears in the address bar.
- Open Files → Downloads, tap the video, then tap the share icon and choose Save Video to put it in your Photos library.
What you get: formats and sizes
| Media in the post | You download | Typical size |
|---|---|---|
| Video | MP4 (H.264 video, AAC audio when the clip has sound) | The largest rendition Threads stored, often 720p |
| Photo | JPG | The largest stored size, often 1080–1440 px wide |
| Carousel | One file per item | Each at its own largest size |
| GIF | MP4 (Threads stores GIFs as video) | Short, small files |
| Text-only post | Nothing | There is no media to save |
The exact pixel size of each item is shown under its preview before you download, so you know what you're getting.
Good reasons to download from Threads
- Backing up your own posts. Threads has no easy export for single posts. This is the quickest way to keep a copy of your own videos and photos.
- Offline viewing of a tutorial, recipe or clip you want to come back to.
- Reference and research. Creators and social media managers keep swipe files of formats and hooks that performed well.
- Sharing with permission. Sending a creator's clip to a colleague who isn't on Threads, with credit.
Downloading from replies, quotes and reposts
Threads conversations are built from many separate posts, and each has its own link. Knowing which one you're looking at saves a lot of "text only" errors:
- Replies are posts in their own right. Tap or click the reply to open it on its own page, then copy that link. The original post's link won't include media from the replies below it.
- Quote posts show another post inside a card. The media in the card belongs to the quoted post, so open the card and copy the link from there.
- Reposts show someone else's post in a person's feed under a "reposted" label. Copy the link from the post itself, which points to the original author.
- Multi-part threads, where an author replies to themselves to continue a thought, are a chain of posts. Each part with a video needs its own link.
Respecting creators' rights
Downloading a post doesn't transfer any rights to it. The person who made the video or photo owns it. Personal, offline viewing is one thing. Re-uploading it to your own account, using it in an ad or presenting it as your own work needs the creator's permission. Threads' built-in Repost and Quote are the right way to share inside the app, because they keep the creator's name and reach attached.
Threads vs Instagram: what's the same and what's different
Threads and Instagram share accounts and media infrastructure, so people often assume one downloader covers both. It doesn't.
| Threads | ||
|---|---|---|
| Post link format | threads.com/@user/post/CODE | instagram.com/p/CODE or /reel/CODE |
| Built-in download button | None | None for others' posts |
| Media per post | Videos and photos, mixed carousels | Videos and photos, mixed carousels |
| Watermark on files | No | No on the file; Reels shared out of the app may get one |
| This tool | Yes | No |
Because a Threads post can be cross-posted from Instagram, the same clip may exist on both. If you have the Threads link, use it here. The file is the same either way.
Backing up all of your own Threads posts at once
If you want every post you've made, not one at a time, Meta has an official export. It lives in Meta's Accounts Center: open it from Threads' settings, go to Your information and permissions → Download your information, choose your Threads profile, pick what to include, and request the download. Menu names shift slightly between app versions, but the export is always in Accounts Center. Meta prepares a file and notifies you when it's ready, which can take a while for large accounts. That export is the right tool for a complete archive. This downloader is quicker for grabbing a single post.
Crediting a creator when you share their clip
If a creator has agreed to let you reuse their video, credit them where people will see it, not just in a comment. A simple, clear format works:
🎥 Video: @creatorname on Threads
Original post: threads.com/@creatorname/post/…
Shared with permission. Tag the creator's handle so they're notified, keep their on-screen text and captions intact, and don't crop out a watermark or name they added to the video itself. Asking first takes a minute, and most creators say yes when they're credited properly.
Downloading a Threads video on desktop, step by step
- Open
threads.comin your browser and find the post. You don't need to be logged in to view public posts. - Click the post's timestamp (e.g. "2d") to open it on its own page, or use ⋯ → Copy link.
- Paste the link into the box above and press Get media.
- Play the preview to check it's the right clip, then press Download. Your browser saves an MP4 named after the account, so files from different creators don't get mixed up.
- For a carousel, download each item you want. Each gets its own number (
-1,-2…) in the file name, in the order they appear in the post.
Video quality, explained
Threads re-encodes every uploaded video for streaming, so the "original quality" you can download is the best version Threads stored, not the creator's raw file. Vertical phone videos often come out at 720×1280. The exact size of each file is shown under its preview. If the result looks soft, the creator's upload was probably lower resolution, or the clip was itself a re-upload from another app. No downloader can recover detail Threads never kept. Tools that "upscale to 4K" only enlarge the same pixels.
Photos work the same way. Threads keeps each photo in several sizes, and the tool always picks the largest one, with its exact pixel size shown under the preview.
Is it safe to use a Threads downloader?
A downloader that only asks for a post link, like this one, never touches your account, so there is nothing of yours for it to misuse. The real risks with Threads downloaders come from three habits worth avoiding:
- Never enter your Instagram or Threads password. Public posts don't need it, and a site that asks for it is collecting logins.
- Be wary of "download" buttons that install something. A video download should give you an
.mp4file, never an.exe,.apkor browser extension prompt. - Watch out for fake buttons in ads. Ad-heavy downloader sites often show several large "Download" buttons, and only one of them is real.
Before opening any downloaded file, check its name ends in .mp4 or .jpg and that the size looks plausible for a short video or photo.
Privacy
The link you paste goes to a small server function that reads the public post and returns the media addresses. Previews load straight from Threads' servers, and downloads are streamed to you without being stored. Nothing is kept: no files, no links, no history, and no account.
