4 steps, no signup
- 01
Copy the post link
On the Tumblr post, tap the share arrow and choose Copy link. On the web, open the post on its own page and copy the address bar.
- 02
Paste it above
Paste the link and press Get media. tumblr.com/blog/123… and blog.tumblr.com/post/123… links both work.
- 03
Preview every item
Every video, photo and GIF in the post and its reblog trail appears in a grid, each shown separately.
- 04
Download
Press Download under any item to save the file Tumblr hosts: MP4 for video, JPG or PNG for photos, GIF for GIFs.
Short answer: to download a Tumblr video, copy the post's link (share arrow, then Copy link), paste it into the box above and press Get media. Every video, photo and GIF in the post appears with its own Download button. It only works for public posts that a logged-out visitor can see.
What this Tumblr video downloader does
Tumblr has no download button for other people's posts. The Tumblr video downloader takes the link to a public post and lists every video, photo and GIF in it, including media in the reblog trail, each with a button that saves the file Tumblr hosts.
Most competing tools only handle video and fail without explanation when a post can't be read. This one also saves photo sets and GIFs, and it tells you exactly why a post can't be downloaded: deleted, text only, embedded from another site, dashboard-only, or behind the mature-content gate.
How it works
Every public Tumblr post has a page at tumblr.com/blogname/postid. That page describes the post in Tumblr's own post format, listing each video, image and text block. A small server function reads that public page, the same one any logged-out visitor sees, and picks out the media blocks. Videos, images and GIFs all come from Tumblr's media servers (addresses ending in media.tumblr.com, such as 64.media.tumblr.com). For each image, the tool picks the largest size Tumblr lists. Tumblr's animated .gifv images are saved as ordinary .gif files.
The tool never logs in, never uses cookies and never reads anything a logged-out visitor can't see.
Which Tumblr links work
| Link type | Example | Works? |
|---|---|---|
| Post on tumblr.com | tumblr.com/blogname/123456789 | Yes |
| Post on the blog subdomain | blogname.tumblr.com/post/123456789/slug | Yes |
| Reblog | The reblog's own link | Yes, media from the trail is included |
| Photo set or GIF post | Any post link | Yes, each item listed |
| Video embedded from YouTube or Vimeo | Any post link | No, the file isn't on Tumblr |
| Dashboard-only or login-required blog | Any | No, by design |
| Mature-flagged post | Any | No, it needs a logged-in account |
| Blog home page or tag page | tumblr.com/blogname | No, link to a single post |
| Custom domain blog | example.com/post/123… | Use the tumblr.com link of the post instead |
How to copy a Tumblr post link
In the Tumblr app (iPhone and Android)
Tap the share arrow under the post and choose Copy link. If you're on a reblog, that copies the reblog's link, which works fine.
On the web
Click the post's ⋯ menu and choose Copy link, or click the post's timestamp to open it on its own page and copy the address bar.
Downloading on each device
| Device | Where the file ends up | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone / iPad (Safari) | Files → Downloads | Open the file → Share → Save Video or Save Image for Photos |
| Android (Chrome) | Downloads folder | Shows up in Google Photos and most galleries |
| Windows / Mac | Your browser's download folder | MP4 plays in any player; GIFs open in any browser |
On iPhone, use Safari itself. In-app browsers inside Tumblr, Instagram or Gmail often block downloads.
Troubleshooting
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| "Doesn't look like a Tumblr post link" | A blog, tag or custom-domain link | Open the post and use Copy link |
| "Only visible to logged-in Tumblr users" | The blogger made the blog dashboard-only or hid it from logged-out visitors | Nothing; that's the blogger's choice. Ask them for the file |
| "Behind Tumblr's mature-content gate" | The post or blog is flagged mature | Not supported |
| "Embedded from YouTube" | The video lives on another service | Open it on that service |
| "Text only" | The post has no media of its own | Check whether the media is in a different post or reblog |
| "That post doesn't exist" | Tumblr returned not found: the post was deleted or the blog renamed | Find the post again from the blog and copy a fresh link |
| "Tumblr didn't respond" | Tumblr was slow or refused the request | Wait a minute and try again |
| "Couldn't find that post" | Deleted post, renamed blog, or a private post | Open the link in a private window to check |
| iPhone plays the video instead of saving | An in-app browser | Open this page in Safari |
A worked example
I tested it on a post from Tumblr's own staff blog, staff.tumblr.com/post/818408523445731328. The tool read the post titled "Where's that comment?" and listed one photo at 1030×1506 pixels, served from 64.media.tumblr.com. Pressing Download saved it as tumblr-staff-…jpg. A video post works the same way, with a playable preview and an MP4 file instead.
For a post with several items, each one gets its own card and the file names end in -1, -2 and so on, in the order they appear in the post.
What it doesn't do
- It doesn't log in, so it can't see dashboard-only blogs, mature-flagged posts or anything else hidden from logged-out visitors.
- It doesn't download whole blogs, tags or likes. One post per paste.
- It can't fetch videos embedded from YouTube, Vimeo or other services. For those, the file isn't on Tumblr.
- It doesn't improve quality. You get the largest file Tumblr stores, nothing sharper.
- There's no "download all" button for multi-item posts; press each Download in turn.
Formats you get
- Video: MP4, the file Tumblr streams (Tumblr's web player version, often 720 pixels on the short side).
- Photos: JPG, or PNG where Tumblr stores one, at the largest size listed.
- GIFs: GIF, so the file still animates.
Copyright and Tumblr's terms
Downloading a post doesn't transfer any rights to it. The person who made it owns it. Personal, offline viewing is one thing; re-uploading, using it in an ad or passing it off as your own needs permission. On Tumblr, reblogging is the built-in way to share, and it keeps the creator credited. If a blogger has hidden their blog from logged-out visitors, this tool treats that as a no.

Privacy
The link you paste goes to a small server function that reads the public post and returns the media addresses. Previews load from Tumblr's servers, and downloads are streamed to you without being stored. No files, links or history are kept, and no account is needed.
