Most-cited domains in Google AI Mode

AI Mode is not AI Overviews. In Ahrefs' US snapshot updated 2 September 2026, Reddit is 17.9% of the top-source pool and YouTube is 17.8%. google.com is third at 12.5%. Other 2026 studies, counting every citation, put google.com first and disagree about what those Google links are.

The short version

AI Mode's US list is a near-tie, not a YouTube list. Ahrefs, updated 2 September 2026: Reddit 17.9% of the top-source pool, YouTube 17.8%, google.com 12.5%. Studies that divide by every citation, rather than by the top 50, put google.com first or second, and they do not agree on whether those links are Business Profiles or links back to a Google results page.

What this page establishes
  • Reddit and YouTube are effectively tied on the early-September US mention-share list, 17.9% and 17.8%. On AI Overviews the same month, YouTube leads by a clear gap.
  • google.com is 12.5% of that top-source pool, against 8.8% on AI Overviews, and it has the most distinct pages in the table.
  • SE Ranking found google.com at 17.42% of all AI Mode citations in February 2026, more than the next six domains combined. Of those Google links, 59% pointed at a Google results page.
  • YouTube's share of AI Mode citation slots fell hard later in September on Otterly's panel, from 13.5% on 1 September to 3.9% on 20 September. The Ahrefs ranks predate that drop.
  • Mention share, share of all citations, and share of answers are three metrics. A domain can be first on one and third on another in the same season without anyone having made an arithmetic error.

The US list, and how it differs

Ahrefs Brand Radar, United States, all topics, page updated 2 September 2026. Mention share among the top sources. The page describes a broad US sample and does not repeat the "over 3 million queries" line from the Overviews article. Ranks were flat versus the prior month. Partial

Against the same vendor's Overviews ten that month, AI Mode cites google.com more and Quora less. A claim that AI Mode cites Quora 3.5 times as often as Overviews is not supported by these two shares. Quora is 3.0% here and 4.7% on Overviews. play.google.com is a separate row at 0.3%, rank 45. News stays small: Forbes 1.0% at rank 12, the New York Times 0.7% at 18.

Japan is the opposite order. Ahrefs' September edition, AI Mode only: google.com rose to first, YouTube fell to second, then Japanese Wikipedia, note.com, and Yahoo! Chiebukuro. Reddit is absent. Shares were not in the extracted text. The US tie is not a global tie.

What the google.com links actually are

Self-citation is the part of this list that changes a plan. If a large share of "sources" are Google's own cards, earning an ordinary web citation is a smaller prize than the league table suggests. The trouble is that the labs do not classify those links the same way.

SE Ranking, 12 February 2026, 68,313 keywords across 20 niches, 1,321,398 citations. google.com was 17.42% of all citations, more than YouTube, Facebook, Reddit, Amazon, Indeed, and Zillow combined. The article does not give those six their own shares. With YouTube included, Google's properties were about 20%. Of the google.com citations: 59% pointed at Google results in the right-hand panel, 36.1% at Business Profiles, 1.7% at Google Support, 0.1% at Flights, 3.1% at other Google properties. In their June 2025 study, 97.9% of Google links were Business Profiles and none were ordinary results pages. The mix flipped. Country of the keyword set is not stated.

Search Engine Journal, 20 July 2026, reporting Profound: more than 32 million google.com/searchviewer instances from 15 April to 30 June 2026. google.com rose 8.4 times and became the number 2 cited domain. SEJ says almost all of the increase was Business Profile cards and Product Knowledge Panels, concentrated in hospitality, home services, restaurants, real estate, healthcare, and product comparisons. Profound's page was not opened for this pass, so the 8.4 times is SEJ's report of it. Partial

Promptwatch's share of all citations moved in the same direction and not to the same levels. April 2026: YouTube 3.34%, Reddit 1.64%, google.com 0.71%. June: google.com 7.31%, YouTube 2.88%, Reddit 2.52%. YouTube's first decline in that series. The June order matches a rising self-citation story. It does not match Ahrefs' early-September mention-share order, where Reddit still leads.

YouTube's share moved in the same month

Otterly, posted 22 September 2026: YouTube's share of citations inside AI Mode fell from 13.521% on 1 September to 3.877% on 20 September. The drop landed on 13 to 15 September, from 11.0% to 3.1%, then sat between 3.4% and 3.9%. AI Overviews fell less, from 8.322% to 6.509%. The Gemini app, tracked separately, fell from 0.439% to 0.216%.

Ahrefs' September pages are dated 2 September. They are a photograph from before that step. LLM Pulse's Overview list on 1 October still has YouTube first, on a different metric and a different surface. Anyone shipping a "September" YouTube plan needs the day, not the month.

A further change is about wrappers, not domains. Evertune, about 180,000 AI Mode responses from 11 August to 3 September, saw direct citation URLs fall to near zero by early September, with 3.5 of the 3.8 remaining sources on google.com/goto redirects. That is a change in how links are wrapped. It is not, by itself, a rise in citations to Google articles. The quarterly page carries the time series: how the list changes.

What this does not prove

Ahrefs' 12.5% cannot be labelled "Business Profiles." The page does not break the domain down. SE Ranking's 59% and Profound's Business Profile story, as reported by SEJ, are both measured and they trade places. Open question No single public classifier has held still long enough to say what google.com means on AI Mode in October 2026.

The product mechanism, including query fan-out, is a different article. This page is the domain list. The mechanism stays on Google AI Mode statistics, and the pre-registered comparison of the two Google surfaces is the source-delta study.

How to use the list

Plan for three hosts, not one. A US AI Mode answer in early September was about as likely to cite Reddit as YouTube, and a large minority of the head was Google citing Google. If your category is travel, restaurants, or local services, read the SE Ranking niche notes before the all-topic ten. Travel's Google share in that February set was 53.18%. Career and jobs was the exception, with Indeed cited 3.1 times as often as Google.

Refresh the YouTube assumption against a post-15-September panel before you commission video only because of the 2 September ranks. The video page keeps YouTube's share by engine in one place: most-cited video domains.

On AI Mode, Reddit and YouTube were tied at about 18% of the US top-source pool. google.com was third, and the studies do not agree what those Google links are.

How this page was built

The ranked ten is Ahrefs, 2 September 2026. SE Ranking's breakdown was re-read. Profound's 8.4-times claim is taken from Search Engine Journal because the original page was not opened. Otterly's September path is a citation-slot series, not mention share. No average of those series is presented as a single AI Mode top ten.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What does AI Mode cite most?
In Ahrefs' US snapshot updated 2 September 2026, reddit.com at 17.9% of the top-source pool and youtube.com at 17.8%. google.com is third at 12.5%, with the widest page count in the table, 2,963,109 pages. SE Ranking, on a February 2026 set of all citations, had google.com first at 17.42%.
Is AI Mode the same source list as AI Overviews?
No. In the only paired US snapshot from this vendor and month, AI Mode ranks Reddit above YouTube, gives google.com 12.5% rather than 8.8%, and gives Quora 3.0% rather than 4.7%. Search Central says the two features may use different models and show different links.
Are the Google links Business Profiles?
Sometimes, and the studies disagree on how often. SE Ranking, February 2026, classed 59% of its google.com AI Mode citations as links to a Google results page and 36.1% as Business Profiles. Search Engine Journal, reporting Profound for April to June 2026, says almost all of a sharp rise was Business Profile cards and Product Knowledge Panels. Different months, different classifiers.
Did YouTube collapse in September?
Otterly's 22 September update says YouTube's share of citations inside AI Mode fell from 13.521% on 1 September to 3.877% on 20 September, with the step on 13 to 15 September. The Ahrefs page is dated 2 September, so it sits before that step. Do not describe the early-September ranks as the state of AI Mode on 3 October without that caveat.
