What this Google Drive direct link generator does
A normal Google Drive share link opens a preview page. That's fine for sharing with a person, but useless for a download button, an <img> tag, an app or a script that needs the file itself. The Google Drive direct link generator rewrites the share link into the format you need: a link that starts the download straight away, an address that works as an image source, a video embed, or an export of a Google Doc, Sheet or Slides deck as PDF, Word, Excel, CSV or PowerPoint.
Short answer: to make a Google Drive direct download link, share the file as "Anyone with the link", copy the share link, and swap /file/d/FILE_ID/view for uc?export=download&id=FILE_ID. Paste the link above and the tool does that swap for you, plus the embed and export versions, without sending your link anywhere.
Link formats it creates
| You need | Generated link | Works for |
|---|---|---|
| Direct download | drive.google.com/uc?export=download&id=ID | Any uploaded file |
| Image in a web page | lh3.googleusercontent.com/d/ID | JPG, PNG, GIF, WebP |
| Video player | drive.google.com/file/d/ID/preview | Videos (in an iframe) |
| Doc as PDF / Word / plain text | docs.google.com/document/d/ID/export?format=pdf | Google Docs |
| Sheet as Excel / CSV | docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ID/export?format=xlsx | Google Sheets |
| Slides as PDF / PowerPoint | docs.google.com/presentation/d/ID/export/pdf | Google Slides |
The ID is the long code in your share link, between /d/ and the next slash. The tool finds it in every common link format, including open?id= links.
Worked example
Say you copy this share link from Drive:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1AbCdEfGhIjKlMnOpQrStUvWxYz012345/view?usp=sharing The tool reads the ID 1AbCdEfGhIjKlMnOpQrStUvWxYz012345 and, with Direct download selected, gives you:
https://drive.google.com/uc?export=download&id=1AbCdEfGhIjKlMnOpQrStUvWxYz012345 Switch to Image embed and the same ID becomes https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/d/1AbC…, with a ready-made <img> tag in the embed box. Paste a Google Sheets link that ends in #gid=123456 instead, and the CSV option keeps that tab: …/export?format=csv&gid=123456. The buttons for link types that don't fit your file are greyed out, so you can't build a PDF export for an uploaded ZIP by mistake.
Converting many links at once
Paste one link per line. Each line gets its own result with Test and Copy buttons, and lines the tool can't read are flagged in place rather than silently dropped. When you pick Image or Video embed, the embed box collects the code for every valid link, one per line, ready to paste into a page. Mixing Docs and uploaded files in one batch works, but each link type only applies to the files it fits.
Before you share: three checks
- Sharing set to "Anyone with the link". Otherwise visitors hit a sign-in page.
- Test in a private window, where you're not signed in to Google. That's what your visitors see.
- Mind the file size. Large files show Google's virus-scan warning before downloading.
Limits worth knowing
- Large files get an interstitial (the size cut-off isn't clearly published): "Google Drive can't scan this file for viruses". Visitors must click "Download anyway".
- Download quotas. Popular public files can temporarily hit "Download quota exceeded". Google doesn't publish the limit.
- Unofficial formats. The image-embed address isn't documented by Google and has changed before. For anything important, host the file yourself or use a CDN.
- Workspace restrictions. Some organisations block external sharing; the link won't work outside the domain.
Troubleshooting
- "Couldn't find a file ID." Folder links (
/drive/folders/…) can't be direct-downloaded. Link to a specific file. - The download is an HTML page. That's the virus-scan or sign-in page. Check sharing and file size.
- Image embed shows a broken image. The file isn't public, or it isn't an image.
- CSV exports the wrong tab. Copy the Sheets link while viewing the tab you want, so it includes
gid=.
Privacy
The tool runs entirely in your browser. It reads the file ID from your link and builds the new address on the page. Nothing is sent to a server.
